RFID goes to hazardous areas

As part of its recently released range of solutions for hazardous areas displayed at May’s Achema exhibition, BL ident from Turck is a comprehensive RFID system for “ex” areas. Claimed to be the first ever intrinsically safe (IS) data carriers (tags), numerous new applications are now possible – even in zone 1. Examples include coupling surveillance, labeling of proprietary plant components, and preventive maintenance of drill pipes.

Besides the BL ident components, the Namur sensor product line, including inductive, capacitive, and magnetic field sensors with standardized Namur output, are now approved for dust zone 20 and gas zone 1, and many even up to zone 0. All sensors are also approved for use in safety-related applications up to SIL 2, in accordance with IEC 61508.
