An ABB technology that helps cement makers reduce their energy consumption by controlling a range of processes in their plants was picked as the “most innovative technology for electrical energy efficiency” at a recent global conference for the cement industryin London.

The Expert Optimizer software was selected by judges from Global Cement and Global Fuels magazines at the event in early February. Cement is one of the most energy intensive industries, accounting for about four percent of global CO2 emissions, and ABB says its technology can reduce the energy consumption of cement plants by about five percent.

Expert Optimizer allows cement plants to reduce energy consumption by optimizing equipment used in the cement production such as mills, kilns and coolers, and implementing optimal schedules for the most efficient use of assets such as the grinding plant. Monitoring of energy consumption is carried out by the system in conjunction with ABB’s Knowledge Manager solution.

“We are truly honored that ABB has been recognized with this award,” said Eduardo Gallestey, Product Manager for Expert Optimizer at ABB, who collected the award at the conference. “It is great to see that ABB’s commitment to innovation, and our focus on improving productivity and energy efficiency, has been acknowledged by the opinion leaders in the market. I was very proud to accept the trophy on behalf of our team.”
