Healthy economic growth, a resurgent oil & gas sector, and the drive for ever more efficient manufacturing made 2006 a stellar year for automation technology providers. What about 2007? Regional CEOs along with industry consultants and commentators give CE Asia their take on how they see the year ahead.
Most industry markets were strong for ABB in 2006, with double-digit increases inorders as we supported customer demand for increased manufacturing capacity andenergy efficiency. We expect the pace of automation-related industrial investments tocontinue into early 2007 in most sectors, notably metals and minerals, marine, and oiland gas. Key trends include the continued integration of disparate systems for processcontrol, production management, asset optimization and device management. Weexpect strong demand for the Industrial IT System 800xA which supports integrationof these functions within a uniform operations and engineering environment. Thereis also an increased focus on performance services through long-term agreements, which entrust plant maintenance functions to third parties while customers focus oncore competencies. ABB in Singapore continues to play an important hub role for ourProcess Automation portfolio within the South Asia Region, including global centersof excellence for the Pulp & Paper and Marine industries.

In 2007, ARC believes itwill become increasinglypossible to performmeasurement andautomation tasks usingwireless networks. Wesee a number of differentnetworking technologiesbeing used, and we alsofind that manufacturers arewilling to invest in this areabecause the economicsavings from using wirelessautomation are oftenimmediate and quitemeasurable. Where wired networks are used, more of these will be Ethernet, which may lose some of its glamour, but will becomepretty much an expected utility service even for quitesmall devices.

2006 was a good year for all industrial automation companies. Positive growth trends in the global GDP and increasedinvestments were favorable for these businesses. The increase in capital spending was driven by a combination of newcapacity enhancement and pressures on productivity for more efficient plants. And the outlook for 2007 remains positive, although there are indicators that the growth will be more moderate compared to 2006. The next few years will seeincreasing focus on connectivity of devices and adoption of wireless technologies. We will see higher implementationof Asset Performance Measurement Systems, which in turn will integrate with Enterprise Information Systems so thatcompanies move towards a collaborative business view. Frost & Sullivan has expanded its breadth and reach in Asia Pacificto cover the new and emerging growth sectors. And we have introduced the Asia Pacific Industrial Excellence Awards torecognize Best Practices across the major automation companies.

During 2006, automation companies showedreasonable growth and profitability, signalinga turnaround from leaner years. Now they areseeking growth opportunities, beyond justconsolidating mergers – some good sizeacquisitions will occur in 2007. Wireless adoptionin industry has been delayed because major suppliers are still debating standards. But industrial wireless is atthe tipping point and significant new products and applications willemerge this year, beyond just hard-wire replacement. This couldspark a new phase of growth. Intelligent equipment, predictivediagnostics and machine-to-machine communications (M2M) willstart to generate increasing efficiencies and productivity as endusersbegin to demand visibility for improved asset management.Production and business systems will increasingly be workingtogether, integrating plant-floor information, production, andbusiness applications across the enterprise. The best resultswill come from those who completely rethink their business andorganization in the light of global opportunities.
