David Johnson is Rockwell Samsung Automation Regional Director & Rockwell Automation Vice President and General Manager of Small Controller Business. He is also slated to lead the company’s Asia Pacific Business Center in Singapore. He comments on the importance of establishing the center.

CE Asia: Please comment on the significance of the Asia Pacific Business Center in the context of Rockwell Automation’s global strategy.
Johnson: It is very significant as the Asia Pacific regional growth is among the highest in the world for our company and the industry at large. It is important for the company to both understand and serve this region in a comprehensive fashion. That means having complete business segments here in Singapore, including design engineering and product marketing, as well as world-class manufacturing.
Manufacturers all over the world are under pressure to increase margins, do more with less, be more flexible, and manage information flow from plant to plant, plant floor to the front office, and country to country. Rockwell Automation recognizes these challenges faced by our customers so as part of the growth strategy to serving our customers worldwide, the Asia Pacific Business Center was established in Singapore.
CE Asia: What are market segments that the Business Center will serve?
Johnson: Rockwell Automation will design, manufacture and market a broad collection of product lines in the Asia Pacific Business Center, including small programmable controllers, distributed I/O systems, and component style HMI and drive products. These products will be exported for sale on a world-wide basis. In addition, the Business Center will serve as a foundation for software and firmware development for many new Logix products, which are among our company’s most contemporary technologies.
CE Asia: How important is design in the automation business? Do you think there is shifting emphasis in this area?
Johnson: I believe that design is critical in the automation business, as it represents the vehicle in which innovation (and therefore value) is delivered to customers. This includes design in both product (like hardware, firmware, mechanical design and software design), and processes like product development and logistics. I think that the emphasis on design is strong and will continue to be that way.
